On September 17, 2026, in Rotterdam, the conference “Ports in Transition: Building Resilient Ecosystems” will mark the culmination of the European MAGPIE and PIONEERS projects, two major initiatives launched by the European Commission. This event will provide an opportunity to review the innovations tested and outline the prospects for European ports by 2050.

Launched five years ago as part of the European Green Deal, the MAGPIE and PIONEERS projects share a common ambition: to accelerate the energy transition of European ports and contribute to the maritime sector’s carbon neutrality by 2050.

Good to know: MAGPIEis coordinated by the Port of Rotterdam, HAROPA PORT, the Port of Sines, and DeltaPort, while PIONEERS is led primarily by the ports of Antwerp-Bruges, Barcelona, Venlo, and Constanța. Each consortium also brings together some forty European partners.

A European vision for the ports of tomorrow

Held at the De Doelen conference center in the heart of Rotterdam, this conference will bring together public policymakers, port authorities, industry representatives, and international experts to discuss the major challenges of the port transition.

Participants will learn about the concrete results of demonstration projects deployed in various European ports, as well as new strategic tools designed to support the sector’s transformation, including a “Master Plan for European Green Ports” intended to facilitate a large-scale transition.

Innovation, energy, and digitalization at the heart of the discussions

The conference program will offer a comprehensive reflection on the future of European port ecosystems by 2050.

Thematic sessions will address, in particular:

  •  the transition to clean energy,
  •  the digitalization and automation of supply chains,
  •  security and resilience challenges for port infrastructure,
  •  financing innovation,
  •  and the evolution of port professions in the face of automation and new technologies.

Networking sessions will also be held throughout the day to facilitate exchanges among public stakeholders, private companies, researchers, and institutions involved in the transition of European ports.
